Kealakekua Bay is located on the west coast of the Big Island, and is just south of Kailua-Kona, roughly 12 miles. It is known to be one of the best snorkeling spots on the Island. On the opposite side of the bay stands the Captain Cook monument. The history behind the monument is that Captain Cook and his crew laded in the Kealakekua Bay in 1779 and were welcomed by the native Hawaiians. However, soon after he died in a conflict that began between the natives and his crew.
My second stop on the Big Island was Mauna Kea. It is one of the five volcanoes that form the big island, and is Hawaii's largest. I wanted to pick the perfect day to make the trip. Weather is an important factor for the view at the top. The forecast for the week was good however everyday drew clouds. It was a matter of picking the the perfect day. Most of the day was clear with some clouds, so I decided to go for sunset. From the hotel I took saddle road to get there. It was
Long before I landed in Hawaii I decided that a coffee tour was a must do. In the middle of my trip I spent the day in Kona. Hula Daddy Coffee was highly recommend on trip advisor and only a few miles away from Basik where I chose to have breakfast. (As a side note Basik made by far the best acai bowl I have ever had.) After a short drive on a few back roads I reached the main entrance to the building, I was greeting almost immediately. The woman who was there invite me to lo
I was on my way to the Waiapola Valley Lookout when I saw a sign. It read Laupahoehoe Harbor. I didn't have a specific plan for the day, and the Waiapola Valley wasn't going anywhere. I decided to take a detour and check out the harbor. After a few twists and turns and a free-range chicken crossing, I approached the harbor. It was a pleasant surprise. It had amazing scenery and fierce wave crashing on the rocky coastline. I hung around there grabbing some wonderful snapshots.
Here are some of the best breakfast places I ate at while on the big island, in no particular order. Basik- By far the best acai bowl I have ever had! Located in Kona, and specializing is smoothies and acai bowls. I opted for the Kilauea (acai & house-made hemp milk, topped with strawberries, papaya, granola, goji berries, bee pollen, and honey). Their products are locally grown and delicious. I ordered a small and it was pretty filling. Perfect breakfast before a morning sno
I can't imagine getting around the Big Island without a car. It was perfect for going from one place to the other. I did some research on which rental models were best suited for touring around, and it really depended on the activities that I wanted to do. As, I previously mentioned in and earlier post, Mauna kea was at the top of my to-do list. It is recommended that you use a four-wheel drive car if you're climbing to the summit, however, many of the rental companies had sp
Aloha! Recently I travelled to the Big Island of Hawaii. It was truly an amazing trip that I was sad to see end. I have always wanted to visit Hawaii, and after doing much research on the Big Island, I booked it! I was there for 10 night and 11 days. It went by fast, and didn't last long enough. While on the island, I stayed on the Waikoloa Coast. Your probably wondering why not Kona? Well, Wiakoloa was the perfect distance from all of the activities and sight-seeing destinat
